Adoption of the tax reform and AHV financing (STAF) (referendum of 19 May 2019)
Peter von Burg
After the Corporate Tax Reform III (USR III) was rejected in February 2017, Swiss voters voted on the tax reform and AHV financing (STAF). The proposal was accepted by the people and cantons with around 66% (cf. preliminary official final results).
The Federal Law on Tax Reform and OASI Financing (STAF) includes in particular additional funds of around CHF 2 billion per year for OASI and the abolition of special taxation of status companies (see in detail the taxlawblog article of 29 September 2018).
The President of the Swiss Confederation, Ueli Maurer, explained that the acceptance of the STAF was an important signal for the security and planning of companies in Switzerland and a first step towards long-term financing of the AHV. The STAF is to come into force on 1 January 2020. Federal Councillor Alain Berset also emphasised that this would ensure the competitiveness of the international tax location (see video reaction by BR Maurer and Berset).
