From 1 January 2024, electric cars will be subject to car tax. At its meeting on 8 November 2023, the Federal Council took note of the results of the consultation and approved the amendment to the Motor Tax Ordinance.
In this way, the Federal Council wants to counteract the tax shortfalls and secure the deposits for the National Roads and Agglomeration Transport Fund (NAF).
With the abolition of the tax exemption as of January 1, 2024, electric cars will be subject to the normal tax rate of 4% on cars used for the transportation of people or goods. The tax will be levied on the import price, not the retail price.
